Kehillah 2010 Updates

July 5, 2010 - Welcome to Israel!

Dear Nesiya Family and Friends,

Your children have arrived in Israel!!! The day we have all been eagerly anticipating has finally arrived: Day 1 of Kehillah Experience 2010. Our journey is off to a great start!

Participants are putting their long flight and inevitable tiredness behind them and are excited to be in Israel, meet new people, and begin their nesiya (journey) together!

Upon arrival, the Americans and Israelis were divided into three subgroups - Kehillot (or Ks, as we call them, meaning "community") One, Two, and Three. Most of the activities this summer will be experienced within these smaller groups to ensure the best dynamic and more individual attention for each participant.

After arriving at the airport, the entire group traveled the short distance to Park Canada, a beautiful nature reserve between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, where they enjoyed a picnic meal (bagels, fresh veggies, spreads and cheeses, pasta, salads, and fruits) and welcoming activities led by their counselor-educators and Nesiya senior staff. Charles Herman, Nesiya's Executive Director, welcomed the group and spoke to them about the complex and multi-faceted truths of Israel and Judaism that the groups will explore this summer.

All groups then headed south towards Har HaNegev, on the edge of the Ramon Crater, also known as the 'Grand Canyon’ of Israel. This "field school", where the groups arrived and settled in just a short while ago, will serve as the base residence for all three groups through early next week.

Tomorrow morning they will begin their desert experience by examining the Lech Lecha Torah text, in which God commands Abraham to leave his home to begin a journey into the wilderness. And tomorrow afternoon the group will go out into the Negev desert for a three-day/two-night 'noded' – a hiking, camping and sleeping-out adventure. Consequently, they will not have cell phone reception until Thursday night (Israel time). Please do not be concerned if you cannot reach your child by phone until then.

I know you have been eagerly awaiting information about who is in your child's Kehillah, and what their Kehillah will be doing on each day of the program. In our email update, we sent out a list of all participants and which Kehillah they are in, information about each of the outstanding young people who will be working as counselor-educators this summer, and itineraries for each of the Kehillot. (If you are a parent of a Summer '10 participant, and did not receive this email, please email our office for copies of these documents.) Please note, this itinerary is rather brief, to allow you to get an "at-a-glance" look at what your child is up to. More detailed information about the sites and activities can be found in your Nesiya Handbook, as well as in my email and online updates. On page seven of the itinerary is a list of base residences and their contact information. If you need to contact Nesiya staff, it is preferable to contact the Nesiya office in Jerusalem by email or phone, or in case of emergency, the cell phone numbers of senior staff provided in the summer handbook. Base residences should be contacted directly only as a last resort.

I look forward to further updating you about your child’s journey through this email list and parallel online updates. Beginning in the next couple days, and throughout the summer, we will also be adding photos of the groups' adventures to the Nesiya website, and will send you a direct link to the photo gallery. Be sure to check the site every few days to look for new pictures. And please feel free to call or email me or any of the Nesiya staff with any questions or concerns.

7.7.2010 - ברוכים הבאים לארץ!

הורי נסיעה שלום,

היום לו כולנו חיכינו הגיע לבסוף: המסע של "קהילה 2010" יצא לדרך! המשתתפים האמריקאים שמו את הטיסה הארוכה ואת העייפות הבלתי נמנעת מאחוריהם. כולם, ישראלים ואמריקאים, התרגשו לפגוש אנשים חדשים ולהתחיל את ה"נסיעה" שלהם ביחד.

אחרי ההגעה לשדה תעופה כל הקבוצה נסעה לפארק קנדה, שמורת טבע יפהפייה הנמצאת במרחק קצר משדה התעופה ומירושלים. בפארק קנדה נפתחה התוכנית רשמית בפעילויות היכרות למיניהם שהובלו על ידי צוות נסיעה. צ'ארלס הרמן, מנכ"ל נסיעה, קידם את פני הילדים ודיבר איתם על המורכבות וריבוי הפנים של היהדות והישראליות, נושאים שהקבוצה תחקור בקיץ. שם, סעדה הקבוצה גם ארוחה בפיקניק, שכלל קישים, פסטות, סלטים, בייגלים, גבינות, ירקות, פירות ועוד.

לאחר מכן, עלו הקהילות לאוטובוסים ונסעו דרומה לכיוון מצפה רמון לבי"ס שדה הר הנגב. בבי"ס שדה זה ישהו שלושת הקהילות עד יום שלישי בשבוע הבא. ביום שלישי החלו הילדים את חווית המדבר שלהם על ידי בחינת הטקסט של "לך לך" מספר בראשית. בטקסט מצווה אלוהים את אברהם לעזוב את ביתו ולהתחיל במסעו לעבר הלא נודע. אחר הצהריים, יצאו הקהילות לטיול נודד של שלושה ימים ושני לילות בנגב. הטיול כלל צעידה, שטח ולינה תחת כיפת השמיים (מלון אלף הכוכבים).

בעת כתיבת שורות אלה, ילדיכם נמצאים ביום השלישי של ההליכה בנגב. הם התעוררו לטיול זריחה יפהפה ועוד מעט הם יגיעו בחזרה לבית ספר שדה הר הנגב, לאכול ארוחת צהרים, להתקלח ולנוח קצת לפני שימשיכו את הדרך שלהם למצפה רמון ולערב ממש כייפי ב"הנגאר אדמה".  

כשהגיעו ביום שני, המשתתפים חולקו לשלוש תת קבוצות ("קהילות" או "Ks" כמו שאנחנו קוראים להם). את רוב הפעילויות בקיץ הם יחוו בפורום המצומצם של הקבוצות הקטנות יותר הללו כדי להבטיח דינאמיקה שמאפשרת יותר מקום ויחס אישי לכל משתתף.

 אני יודעת שאתם מצפים בקוצר רוח למידע על הקהילה של ילדיכם, ומה הקהילה הזאת תעשה בכל יום מהתוכנית. אז:

רשימת המשתתפים מצורפת, עם מידע על איזה קהילה ("K") כל חניך נמצא, יחד עם מידע על כל המדריכים-מחנכים המדהימים שעובדים הקיץ, והלו"זים של הקבוצות. שימו לב, הלו"ז הוא יחסית קצר כדי שתוכלו לקבל תמונה מהירה של מה הילד/ה שלכם עושה. מידע יותר מפורט על האתרים והפעילויות תוכלו למצוא בעדכונים שלי ובאתר האינטרנט של נסיעה.

בעמוד השביעי של הלו"ז ישנה רשימה של מקומות לינה ומידע ליצירת קשר איתם. אם אתם צריכים להשיג איש צוות של נסיעה, עדיף ליצור קשר עם משרדי נסיעה בירושלים באימייל או בטלפון, או במקרה חירום להתקשר לאחד ממספרי הטלפון הניידים של אנשי צוות בכירים הנמצאים ברשימת הטלפונים שקיבלתם.  אנא צרו קשר ישיר עם מקומות הלינה רק כמוצא אחרון ובמקרים דחופים ביותר בלבד.

אחרון אחרון חביב, תשמחו לדעת שהעלינו סדרה ראשונה של תמונות לאתר נסיעה. אתם יכולים לצפות בהן דרך הקישור "What's New"  בעמוד הבית של האתר, או דרך הקישור גלריית תמונות. לאורך הקיץ כולו אני אשמח לעדכן אתכם בקורותיהם של הילדים בהמשך המסע דרך רשימת המיילים הזו, ונעלה גם תמונות של הקבוצה והרפתקאותיה כך שכל מספר ימים תוכלו לצפות בתמונות חדשות ולהישאר מעודכנים.
