July 22, 2009 - Welcome to Jerusalem!

Dear Nesiya Parents and Friends,

Welcome to Jerusalem! All three groups have arrived!

But before we move on to the Jerusalem unit, let's rewind to the end of last week. After two days of exploring the Golan Heights, all three groups returned to the Hermon Field School for a restful and debate-filled Shabbat. After welcoming Shabbat together, participants split into prayer and alternative options, including Orthodox and Reform prayer services, a movement workshop, a Shabbat storytelling session, and a participant-led prayer-oriented discussion. The whole community then joined together for a festive Shabbat dinner and oneg.

The Shabbat morning creative text study by Kehillah focused on the story of the two-and-a-half tribes in the Book of Numbers, who negotiate with Moses for permission to live outside the land of Israel. These sessions evolved into dynamic conversations on the questions of whether it is important for Jews to live in Israel, and what type of obligations all Jews have toward one another. Participants and staff shared their diverse views on these topics, and engaged in excited debate with each other.

Shabbat concluded with chanich and madrich stories (Moran's, Aaron's and Amy's madrich stories were, as usual, one of the highlights of the Shabbat experience) and havdalah, followed by an energetic game of "Capture the Flag" with all three groups.

On Sunday and Monday, participants welcomed the opportunity to spend a more relaxed two days at the base, engaging in their second round of arts workshops on the theme "The Individual and the Community." Workshops were offered in music, drama, visual arts, movement, creative writing, and photography, and served as an excellent way to close and reflect on the Galil unit. The two days concluded with an awesome display of depth, creativity and talent at the presentations on Monday afternoon.

Participants also had the option to spend these two days on an intensive hike and camp-out in the Golan Heights. The thirty-something participants and counselors who chose this option spent two days in the Golan exploring Nachal El-Al, Nachal Semech and Nachal Kanaf, splashing and swimming in waterfalls, and sleeping out and cooking their own dinner at Um El Kantur, a village from the time of the Babylonian Talmud and the site of one of the most ancient synagogues yet discovered in Israel. The hike was led by Michael Even-Esh, who has worked for almost two decades as a nature guide and educator.

Before saying goodbye to the lush green landscapes of the Galilee and Golan, each Kehillah engaged in an activity exploring the many and varied approaches to Judaism in Diaspora communities. Whereas much of the six-week program is focused on Israel and Israeli life, this activity offered Israeli and American participants a chance to deepen their knowledge about the different Jewish movements prevalent in North America, and provided the North American participants with an opportunity to share more about their personal and communal practices and beliefs.

The participants have now embarked on the next unit of the program - Taking Place: The Struggle for Renewal in Judaism and Israel Today - which includes time in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and the Bedouin city of Rahat (near Beer Sheva). Each of these three locations will underscore different experiences relating to the realities of Judaism and Israeli life today, and our diverse and shared visions for the future.

After an introduction to Jerusalem, the participants spent a fun and relaxing evening buying dinner, shopping, and exploring the trendy Emek Refaim area of Jerusalem, with lots of cafes, restaurants, and shops.

As I write, K1 and K2 are exploring the Old City of Jerusalem, focusing on the question of what makes this particular place so central and fundamental to Judaism and Jews throughout history. K3 is engaged in a day exploring the background and history of the Israeli-Arab conflict, with a day-long tour of sites in and around Jerusalem. Tomorrow the groups will switch - K3 will be in the Old City and K1 and K2 will explore the Israeli-Arab conflict - before all participants depart for the home hospitality weekend.

And now, a review of some important information for the upcoming weekend:

As you know, this weekend is the Home Hospitality Shabbat, during which your children will see another side of Israel by spending time in an Israeli home.

The children will be with their hosts from Thursday evening, July 23rd through Sunday morning, July 26th. They will depart from Jerusalem, and return Sunday morning to Tel Aviv.

By now, both your children and Nesiya staff have been in touch with their host families. Several of the American participants are planning to spend the weekend in the home of one of their Israeli peers from the Nesiya program, while others are staying in the homes of friends or relatives, or are joining other American participants at their host homes. Nesiya staff has been in touch with all of the hosts to confirm the visit with them and to explain the transportation and security guidelines for the weekend.

Based on all the different host locations, we have planned private bus routes that will stop at several central points throughout Israel, where the hosts will pick up your children. Sunday morning, a bus will pick up the children from the same locations where they were dropped off, and will take them to the group meeting point in Tel Aviv.

We have written a number of security guidelines for the Home Hospitality Weekend, which each host is obligated to follow. All of the adult hosts have signed (or soon will) a form indicating that they are committing themselves (and the participants) to the guidelines for the entire weekend. The guidelines explain: participants are not allowed to travel by public transportation, not allowed to cross the green line (unless you give prior permission), and are not allowed to visit any crowded public places that do not have security. The guidelines also make clear that participants are expected to adhere to all of the rules of the program, as detailed in "Our Culture."

Experience has proven that the home hospitality weekend is one of the highlights for the North American participants. It's a special opportunity for them to experience authentic Israeli culture, as well as to take a small break from the intensity of group living. They will be spread throughout the country from Haifa to Beer Sheva and we look forward to hearing about their adventures!

הורי נסיעה וחברים יקרים,

ברוכים הבאים לירושלים! כל שלושת הקבוצות הגיעו!

אבל לפני שנתקדם ליחידת ירושלים, בוא נריץ אחורה לסוף השבוע שעבר. אחרי יומיים של סיורים ברמת הגולן, שלושת הקבוצות חזרו לבית ספר שדה חרמון לשבת של דיונים ומנוחה. אחרי שקיבלו יחד את השבת, המשתתפים התחלקו לקבוצות של תפילה ואפשרויות אחרות, וביניהם תפילה אורתודוכסית, רפורמית, סדנת תנועה, סדנת מספרי סיפורים, ודיון בנושא תפילה בהנחיית המשתתפים. הקהילה כולה התאספה לארוחת שבת חגיגית ו"עונג שבת".

לימוד המקורות היצירתי של "קהילה" בשבת בבוקר התמקד בסיפור של שניים וחצי השבטים מספר במדבר, שמנהלים משא ומתן עם משה על הזכות לחיות מחוץ לארץ ישראל. הסדנאות הללו הובילו לשיחה דינמית בנוגע לשאלה האם חשוב שיהודים יחיו בישראל, ומה סוג המחויבות שיש ליהודים אחד כלפי השני. המשתתפים והצוות שיתפו בדעות מגוונות בנושאים האלה, ונטלו חלק בדיון סוער.

השבת הסתיימה בסיפורי חניך ומדריך (סיפורי המדריכים מורן, אהרון ואיימי, כרגיל היו משיאי השבת) והבדלה שאחריה נערך משחק "כיבוש הדגל" עם שלושת הקבוצות.

ביום ראשון ושני הקבוצות נהנו מהזדמנות לבלות יומיים רגועים יותר בבית ספר השדה, והשתתפו בסבב השני של סדנאות יצירה בנושא "היחיד והקהילה". הוצעו סדנאות בתחומים של מוזיקה, דרמה, אמנות, תנועה, כתיבה יוצרת וצילום, והיו דרך מצויינת לעיבוד וסיכום של יחידת הגליל. היומיים הסתיימו במפגן מרשים של עומק, יצירתיות וכישרון בתצוגת הסיום ביום שני בצהריים.

למשתתפים הייתה גם האפשרות לצאת לטיול בן יומיים עם לינת שטח ברמת הגולן. יותר משלושים חניכים ומדריכים בחרו בכך ובילו יומיים בגולן בנחל אל על, נחל סמך ונחל כנף. הם השתכשכו ושחו במים ובמפלים, ישנו תחת כיפת השמיים ובישלו בעצמם ארוחות באום אל קנטור, כפר מתקופת האמוראים והאתר בו נמצא אחד מבתי הכנסת העתיקים ביותר בארץ. את הטיול הדריך מיכאל אבן-אש, שכמעט עשרים שנה עוסק בהדרכת טיולים וחינוך.

לפני הפרידה מהצפון הירוק, כל קהילה השתתפה בפעילות שחקרה את הגישות השונות ליהדות בקהילות התפוצות. בעוד הרבה משש השבועות של התוכנית מתמקדות בישראל והחיים בה, הפעילות הזו העניקה למשתתפים האמריקאים והישראליים הזדמנות להעמיק את ההבנה שלהם בנוגע לתנועות השונות הקיימות ביהדות צפון אמריקה, ונתנה לצפון אמריקאים אפשרות לחלוק עוד על המנהגים והאמונה שלהם.

המשתתפים התחילו כעת את היחידה הבאה בתוכנית – "מקום: המאבק להתחדשות ביהדות ובישראל היום". ביחידה זו יהיה החניכים יבקרו בתל אביב, ירושלים, ובעיר הבדואית רהט (ליד באר שבע). כל אחד מהמקומות האלה ידגיש פן אחר בחוויות הנוגעות למציאות היהודית והישראלית היום, וגם את החזון המגוון והמשותף לעתיד.

אחרי ההקדמה לירושלים, המשתתפים נהנו מערב כיפי ורגוע של קניות, ארוחת ערב ובילוי באזור עמק רפאים בירושלים בו הרבה בתי קפה, מסעדות וחנויות.

בזמן כתיבת שורות אלה K1 ו-K2 מסתובבים בעיר העתיקה בירושלים, ובוחנים את השאלה מה הופך את המקום הזה דווקא כל כך מרכזי ומשמעותי ליהדות וליהודים במהלך ההיסטוריה. K3 עסקה במשך היום ברקע ההיסטורי לסכסוך הישראלי-ערבי וסיירה באתרים בירושלים והסביבה. מחר הקבוצות יתחלפו – K3 תבקר בעיר העתיקה, ו-K1 ו-K2 ילמדו על הסכסוך הישראלי-ערבי – לפני שכולם יתפזרו לשבת האירוח.

כפי שאתם יודעים, השבת הקרובה היא שבת האירוח בה המשתתפים הישראלים יכולים לחזור הביתה, והמשתתפים האמריקאיים זוכים לחוות פן נוסף של ישראל בזמן שהם שוהים בבתיהם של משפחות ישראליות.

הניסיון מלמד ששבת האירוח היא אחת מגולות הכותרת עבור המשתתפים האמריקאיים. זוהי הזדמנות מיוחדת בשבילם לחוות את התרבות הישראלית האותנטית, וכן לקחת פסק זמן מהאינטנסיביות של חיי קבוצה. המשתתפים יתפרשו בארץ מחיפה עד באר שבע ואנחנו מצפים לשמוע על החוויות שלהם כשיחזרו.
