The program is back in full swing after what was hopefully a restful and relaxing home hospitality weekend!

Upon their return from the weekend, participants compared stories of their weekend – who had the most soulful chicken soup, the most flavorful meals, the most sumptuous cakes, the most comfortable bed, the most enlightening Shabbat lunch conversation, etc. etc. For many of the participants this past Shabbat provided a wonderful opportunity to strengthen their relationships with their Israeli peers; for others it was a chance to visit with (or meet!) Israeli relatives and friends. The weekend offered an invaluable opportunity for everyone to truly experience Israel. No matter how many site visits, speakers, workshops and group encounters we arrange, nothing can compare with spending time in an Israeli home for a dynamic, authentic experience of life in this country.

Before the free weekend, each group visited important sites in Jerusalem and delved deeper into this unit’s theme: Taking Place: The Struggle for Renewal in Judaism and Israel Today. During their day in the Old City of Jerusalem, each group began with an overlook of the First Temple period City of David and the Silwan Valley, visited the Kotel (Western Wall) and Kotel Tunnels, and spent time exploring the Davidson Center and the excavations at the Southern Wall. After their tour, the groups had ample time to shop and eat in the Jewish Quarter, before returning to their base to study the Jacob's Ladder text (Genesis Chapter 28) and engage in a dynamic discussion about their personal connection to the text and their understanding of holy space.

Participants also spent a day exploring the history of the Israeli-Arab conflict over the last 100 years, with a particular focus on the background of the conflict in the Jerusalem area. This day, built in partnership with master educator Paul Liptz, included visits to the Castel and the road from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Rechavia, the King David Hotel, Talbiyah, and the Haas Promenade overlooking the Separation Barrier. Throughout this day participants strove to understand the demographics, ideologies, motivations, and pressures present on both sides, and to build a foundation for better understanding the situation in Israel today.

After the weekend, all three groups returned to Tel Aviv – the "cultural center" of Israel. Throughout the day on Sunday and Monday, the participants discovered the sights, sounds, and smells of Tel Aviv, and explored the role that Tel Aviv has in modern Israel and Judaism.

The visit to Tel Aviv included a screening of two short films about Tel Aviv produced for an Israeli documentary station; an educational tour of Neve Tzedek, one of the earliest neighborhoods in Tel Aviv; a tour of Independence Hall, where David Ben Gurion signed Israel's Declaration of Independence in 1948; a tour of Neve Sha'anan, home to many foreign workers and Sudanese refugees, led by guides from BINA; and a visit to the Tel Aviv Museum where participants questioned the concept of Israeli and Jewish art. They also spent time on the beach and on Sheinkin Street, the trendiest spot in the city, where the participants enjoyed sidewalk cafes, chic fashion boutiques and time to buy their own lunch and relax.

Following the two days in Tel Aviv our Israel travelers traveled to Beer Sheva. There they opened the two-day exchange program with Bedouin teens through a meeting with Ali Al Krenawi, from the Israeli Ministry of Education, who gave an introduction to the Bedouin in Israel, through his personal life story. Since then, the participants have spent the last day and a half in Rahat meeting with local high school students for workshops, games, conversations and meals to explore commonalities, differences, and questions of identity and community. Rahat (which in Arabic means 'a group of people living together') is situated in the northern Negev and is the Negev’s largest Bedouin city. Nesiya coordinates the encounter program together with the El-Razi High School with whom we have established a close working relationship over the past six years, as well as with the El Nur High School who began working with us this year.

This afternoon, after finishing in Rahat, the groups will return to Jerusalem, where they will begin preparing for the Tisha B'Av fast day tonight and tomorrow.

29.7.09 - תל אביב-רהט

שלום הורי נסיעה וחברים,

התוכנית חזרה לקצב אחרי שבת האירוח שאנו מקווים שהייתה רגועה ומהנה עבור כולם!

עם חזרתם מסוף השבוע, המשתתפים חלקו חוויות וסיפורים – מי אכל את מרק העוף הטוב ביותר, מי אכל את הארוחה הטעימה ביותר, העוגות הנהדרות, המיטה הכי נוחה, שיחת השבת הכי מרתקת וכו' וכו'. עבור רבים מהמשתתפים, השבת היתה הזדמנות נפלאה לחזק את הקשר שלהם עם חברי הקבוצה הישראלים. עבור אחרים זו הייתה הזדמנות לבקר (או לפגוש!) קרובי משפחה או חברים ישראלים. סוף השבוע נתן לכולם את האפשרות לחוות את ישראל באמת. לא משנה בכמה אתרים נבקר, או כמה מרצים, סדנאות או מפגשים קבוצתיים נארגן, שום דבר לא יכול להשתוות לאירוח בבית ישראלי לחוויה אותנטית ודינמית של החיים במדינה הזאת.

לפני השבת החופשית, כל קבוצה ביקרה אתרים חשובים בירושלים וצללה לתוך הנושא של היחידה: "מקום: המאבק להתחדשות יהודית בישראל היום." בזמן הביקור שלהם בעיר העתיקה בירושלים, כל קבוצה החלה בתצפית על עיר דוד בתקופת בית המקדש הראשון ועל עמק סילוואן, ביקרה בכותל המערבי ובמנהרות הכותל, וסיירה במרכז דוידסון וחפירות הכותל הדרומי. לאחר הסיור, לקבוצות היה זמן רב לעשות קניות ולאכול ברובע היהודי לפני החזרה לאכסנייה ללימוד מקורות על הסיפור של סולם יעקב (בראשית, פרק כד') ולדיון פורה על הקשר האישי בין המקור וההבנה שלהם מה זה מקום קדוש.

החניכים גם הקדישו יום לחקר ההיסטוריה של הסכסוך הערבי-ישראלי במאה השנים האחרונות, עם דגש מיוחד על הרקע לסכסוך באזור ירושלים. יום זה, שתוכנן עם מחנך-העל פול ליפץ, כלל ביקור בקסטל ובדרך שעוברת בין תל אביב וירושלים, סיור ברחביה, מלון המלך דוד, טלביה וטיילת האס שממנה ניתן לראות את גדר ההפרדה. במהלך יום זה, החניכים שאפו להבין את הדמוגרפיה, האידאולוגיה, המוטיבציה והלחצים שנמצאים בשני הצדדים ולגבש בסיס של הבנה טובה יותר את המצב בישראל כיום.

לאחר סוף השבוע, כל שלושת הקבוצות חזרו לתל אביב – "המרכז התרבותי" של ישראל. במשך יום ראשון ושני, המשתתפים גילו את המראות, הצלילים והריחות של תל אביב, וחקרו את תפקידה של תל אביב בישראל וביהדות של היום.

הביקור בתל אביב כלל הקרנה של שני סרטים קצרים שהופקו עבור תחנת טלוויזיה תיעודית; סיור חינוכי בנווה צדק, אחת השכונות הותיקות ביותר בעיר; ביקור בהיכל העצמאות, בו חתם דוד בן גוריון על מגילת העצמאות ב-1948; סיור בנווה שאנן, ביתם של עובדים זרים רבים ופליטים סודנים, בהדרכת מדריכים ממרכז בינה; וכן ביקור במוזיאון תל אביב שבו המשתתפים דנו ברעיון של אמנות ישראלית ויהודית. הם גם בילו בחוף הים וברח' שינקין, נהנו מבתי קפה, חנויות אופנתיות וזמן חופשי לקנות ארוחת צהריים ולנוח.

לאחר היומיים בתל אביב, הקבוצות נסעו לבאר שבע. שם הם החלו בסדנא בת יומיים עם נוער בדואי דרך מפגש עם עלי אלקרנאווי, ממשרד החינוך, שהציג את הקהילה הבדואית בישראל דרך סיפור חייו האישי. המשתתפים בילו יום וחצי ברהט במפגש עם תיכוניסטים מקומיים לסדנאות, משחקים, שיחה וארוחות כדי לגלות תחומים משותפים והבדלים, ולעסוק בשאלת הזהות והקהילה. רהט, (הפירוש בערבית הוא קבוצה של אנשים שחיים יחד) נמצאת בצפון הנגב והיא העיר הבדואית הגדולה ביותר. נסיעה מתאמת את המפגשים יחד עם תיכון אל-עזי, איתם אנו משתפים פעולה בשש השנים האחרונות, וכן עם תיכון אל-נור שהחל לעבוד איתנו השנה.

היום אחר הצהריים, לאחר הסיום ברהט, הקבוצות ישובו לירושלים ויתכוננו לקראת תשעה באב והצום שמתחיל היום בערב עד מחר.
