July 5, 2009 - Noded and Shabbat in the Negev

Shalom Nesiya Family and Friends,

Day 7 and counting... K1 is off to a strong start. Participants have been developing wonderful relationships with each other, their counselors, and the senior educators. Carmel, Yoni, Moran and Alex have had a wonderful few days getting to know your amazing children and confirm that group energy is high and positive.

Tuesday morning, before heading out to their Noded ("wandering") hike in the desert, K1 completed its first Nesiya text study! (Kol hakavod - congratulations - to them!). The group examined the Lech Lecha biblical text, in which God commands Abraham to leave his home to begin a journey into the wilderness. The biblical text served as a jumping off point for participants to explore their own personal journey: Why have I set out on this journey and where am I going? Who is on this journey with me? What is my motivation? What should I bring with me on this journey? What should I leave behind?

The group read the text in small groups and answered questions they had about the story. Participants then charted their own "life journeys" using masking tape, marking important moments and events in their lives and creating a visual masterpiece of twisting and turning tape lines on the floor, walls and chairs. The activity ended with a return to the text and each participant's connection to it.

Late in the afternoon, the group embarked upon their own Noded, joined by special guest Tami Dayan. They hiked down into Machtesh Ramon (Ramon Crater), a beautiful natural formation known as Israel's "Grand Canyon." Following dinner, the group slept under the stars on the crater floor.

The next day... Waking up bright and early, K1 set out on their journey through the desert. Especially moving was their hike to the top of Har (Mount) Ardon to see the sunrise. The descent was challenging for many of the participants, and the counselors were very moved by the ways in which the participants helped each other down. After a few hours of hiking, they stopped in the shade due to a heat wave, which prevented them from hiking until early evening. The participants took advantage of the time to play guitars and sing, share stories, and rest, as well as to discuss and eat yummy food. Throughout the Noded, the participants explored themes of the desert, studied the geology of the area, learned new songs, prepared outdoor meals together, sat around the campfire, and star-gazed late into the night. They certainly have a new sense of what hot weather REALLY is and drank copious amounts of water, setting the standard for the rest of the summer.

Thursday, after their morning hike, K1 returned to their base at Har Hanegev and took showers, washing away days of sweat and toil. (I’m adding some Indiana Jones-esque dramatic effects... Don’t worry, everyone made it back safely)! That evening, they ventured in to the nearby small development town of Mitzpe Ramon. They interviewed local residents about their lives and the role they had in developing this area of the country.

Shabbat was a balance of peaceful time for reflection, energized singing, challenging conversations, silly games, text learning, special foods, and rest. Participants are learning how to celebrate Shabbat together as a community despite their different religious upbringings and varied levels of observance. On Friday morning, K1 engaged in an opening session to Shabbat, and then the participants initiated a group discussion focused on how to create an environment which respects each individual's approach to Shabbat. After a pre-kabbalat Shabbat activity, K1 joined with the other two Kehillot for prayer and alternative options and a festive Shabbat dinner.

On Shabbat morning, each Kehillah engaged in a conversation about different approaches to studying Torah and how people with very different views can study together and learn from each other. Nesiya counselor-educators and senior staff noticed that participants have developed respect for each other and have created a warm atmosphere in which participants feel comfortable to participate and express themselves.

In the afternoon, after a few hours of Shabbat menucha (rest), Nesiya staff introduced a dynamic discussion on modesty and sexuality, within the context of responsibility and community. Each group then divided into separate boy/girl break-out sessions in which they spoke about relationships, modesty and intimacy, and the different backgrounds and assumptions that each participant brings to the new community they are forming. The discussion raised challenging questions but participants left the conversation feeling positive.

A highlight of Shabbat afternoon was the madrich story, during which one of the four counselor-educators in each group shares his life story (or a meaningful part of it) with his group. This past Shabbat, Yoni shared his story to an enraptured audience. Next Shabbat, participants will hear from another one of their counselor-educators, and will begin sharing shorter stories of their own with their small groups. After a long day filled with some rest, much meaningful conversation, and plenty of engaging activities, the group finished with havdalah late in the evening, and then had some free time to rest and relax before heading to bed.

This morning, participants from all of the Kehillot began their first set of arts workshops, which will last through Monday evening.

נודד ושבת בנגב

חברים ומשפחה של נסיעה היקרים,

היום השביעי כבר מאחורינו... K1 התחילו במרץ. המשתתפים מפתחים חברויות נפלאות אחד עם השני, עם המדריכים ועם הצוות החינוכי. כרמל, יוני, מורן ואלכס מאוד נהנו בימים האחרונים להכיר את הילדים המדהימים שלכם ואישרו שהאנרגיה בקבוצה גבוהה וחיובית.

ביום שלישי בבוקר, לפני היציאה ל"טיול נודד" במדבר, K1  השלימו את לימוד המקורות הראשון שלהם! (כל הכבוד להם!). הקבוצה למדה את הטקסט המקראי של "לך לך", בו אלוהים מצווה על אברהם לעזוב את ביתו ולהתחיל לנדוד במדבר. הטקסט המקראי משמש כקרש קפיצה למשתתפים לחקור את המסע הפרטי שלהם: למה יצאתי למסע ולאן אני הולך? מי נמצא במסע יחד איתי? מה מניע אותי? מה עליי להביא עימי למסע? מה עליי להשאיר מאחור?

 הקבוצה קראה את המקור בקבוצות קטנות וענתה על שאלות שהיו לה בקשר לסיפור. לאחר מכן, המשתתפים "יצרו" את מסע החיים שלהם עד עכשיו בנייר דבק (מסקינג טייפ) – הם סימנו רגעים ואירועים משמעותיים בחייהם על ידי מתיחה וסיבוב של נייר דבק על הרצפה, הקירות והכסאות. הפעילות הסתיימה בחזרה לטקסט וכיצד כל חניך מתחבר אליו.

מאוחר בצהריים, הקבוצה יצאה ל"טיול נודד", יחד עם אורחת מיוחדת, תמי דיין. הם ירדו לתוך מכתש רמון, ולאחר ארוחת ערב, ישנו ברצפת המכתש תחת כיפת השמיים.

 היום למחרת.... K1 התעוררו השכם בבוקר ויצאו למסע במדבר. הטיפוס לפסגת הר ארדון לראות את הזריחה היה מרגש במיוחד. הירידה מההר היתה מאתגרת עבור רבים מהמשתתפים, והמדריכים התרגשו מאוד לראות את הדרכים בהם החניכים עזרו אחד לשני. אחרי מספר שעות של הליכה, הם עצרו בצל בגלל החום הכבד, אשר מנע מהם ללכת עד לשעות הערב. החניכים ניצלו את הזמן לנגן בגיטרה ולשיר, לחלוק סיפורים ולנוח וכן לאכול אוכל טעים. במהלך ה"נודד", המשתתפים חקרו את הנושא של המדבר, למדו את הגיאולוגיה של האזור, הכירו שירים חדשים, הכינו ארוחות שטח ביחד, ישבו סביב המדורה וצפו בכוכבים אל תוך הלילה. הם בהחלט קיבלו תחושה של מזג אוויר חם באמת ושתו כמויות עצומות של מים, ובכך הניחו את הסטנדרט להמשך הקיץ.

 ביום חמישי, אחרי טיול הזריחה, K1 שבו לבסיסם בהר הנגב והתקלחו, שוטפים מעליהם את הזיעה והמאמץ של הימים האחרונים (אני מוסיפה כאן דרמה בנוסח אינדיאנה ג'ונס, אבל אל תדאגו, כולם חזרו בשלום!). באותו ערב, הם יצאו למצפה רמון הסמוכה וראיינו תושבים מקומיים על חייהם והתפקיד שהיה להם בפיתוח איזור זה במדינה.  

שבת היתה איזון של זמן רגוע למחשבה, שירה מעוררת, שיחות מאתגרות, משחקים כיפיים, לימוד מקורות, אוכל מיוחד ומנוחה. המשתתפים לומדים איך לחגוג את השבת יחד כקהילה למרות ההבדלים ברקע הדתי והרמות השונות של הקפדה. ביום שישי בבוקר, K1 התקבצו לסדנת פתיחה משותפת לשבת, ויזמו שיחה קבוצתית שהתמקדה ביצירת אווירה שמכבדת את הגישה של כל אחד לשבת. אחרי פעילות טרום-קבלת שבת, K1 הצטרפו לשתי הקהילות האחרות לתפילה ואופציה אלטרנטיבית ולארוחת שבת חגיגית.

 בשבת בבוקר, כל קהילה שוחחה על הגישות השונות של לימוד תורה וכיצד אנשים עם דעות שונות יכולים ללמוד יחד וללמוד אחד מהשני. צוות המדריכים והמחנכים של נסיעה שמו לב שהחניכים פיתחו כבוד וסובלנות אחד לשני ויצרו אווירה חמה בה כל משתתף מרגיש בנוח להביע את עצמו.

 בצהריים, אחרי מספר שעות של מנוחת שבת, צוות נסיעה הציג שיחה דינמית בנושא צניעות ומיניות, בהקשר של אחריות וקהילה. כל קבוצה התחלקה לקבוצות נפרדות לבנים ובנות ודיברו על יחסים, צניעות ואינטימיות, והרקעים וההנחות השונות שכל משתתף מביא עימו לקהילה החדשה שהם יוצרים. הדיון העלה שאלות מאתגרות אבל החניכים עזבו בתחושה חיובית.

 אחד מהשיאים בשבת בצהריים היה סיפור המדריך, בו אחד מארבעת המדריכים-מחנכים בכל קבוצה משתף בסיפור חייו. בשבת האחרונה, יוני שיתף בסיפורו לקהל מרותק. בשבת הבאה, החניכים ישמעו את סיפורו של אחד המדריכים האחרים ויחלו לשתף בסיפורים קצרים משל עצמם בקבוצות קטנות. אחרי יום ארוך של מנוחה, שיחות משמעותיות ופעילויות רבות, הקבוצה סיימה בהבדלה, ולאחריה זמן פנוי למנוחה ורגיעה לפני השינה.

 הבוקר, משתתפים מכל הקהילות החלו בסדרה הראשונה של סדנאות האמנות, אשר יימשכו עד ליום שני בערב.
