Kehillah 2009 Updates July 9, 2009 - Desert Arts and The Journey North Dear Nesiya Families and Friends, When we last met the Kehillah participants, they were nearing the conclusion of their desert experience as they participated in their first creative arts workshops. Participants had the choice of workshops in seven media, including drama, creative writing, visual arts, painting, music, photography and movement. In the workshops, they grappled with the themes of home and journey and expressed their responses to these themes. The workshops lasted two days, Sunday and Monday, and culminated with presentations in which each workshop group shared their artistic expression with participants from other workshops, and, perhaps more importantly, spoke articulately about their processes of creation. I encourage you to ask your children to keep their writings or mementos of their presentations, so they can share them with you after they return home. On Sunday night, between the two days of workshops, the participants had an amazing opportunity to visit the Mitzpe Ramon Hangar - a unique institution founded by a group of Israeli artists who chose to move to this peripheral development town in order to help build, support, and develop the arts within the local community. During an extended evening at the Hangar, the participants: visited artists' galleries, where they had the opportunity to see (and purchase, if they chose) local artists' work; watched a spectacular performance by the Adamah dance company; participated in a dance and "contact improv" workshop led by the Adamah artists; shared and jammed with some of their own music; and had time to just hang out in this very "cool" space. Participants left the desert on Tuesday morning with a visit to Ben Gurion's gravesite in Sde Boker, highly energized for the next unit of the program - “Searching for a Shared Purpose in History.” Their first stop on the way up north was the shores of the Kinneret, where they were rejuvenated by the lake's silky water (yes, they went swimming!) and satiated by the culinary delights of homemade pizza (made by Barry, the "pizza man"!). After sleeping out on the beach, the participants were ready to begin exploring models of community and culture represented by Zionist pioneers, Talmudic Rabbis, and the mystics of Tsfat through the history of northern Israel. In Tzippori, (which K1 visited on Wednesday and K2 and K3 will visit Friday), the groups learn about the rabbinic community of the second century and visit Roman and rabbinic archeological sites, including an amphitheater and synagogue ruins with depictions of the zodiac signs. Participants compare this historical Jewish community to today's community, noting the tensions between religiously observant and secular Jews from then and now. In Chavat Kinneret, the site of the first kibbutz in Israel (where K2 and K3 were on Wednesday, and K1 is visiting today), the groups look at more recent efforts to build communities and learned about secular Zionism. They also visit the cemetery where early pioneers and Zionist visionaries are buried, including the well known poetess Rachel and the late, great songwriter Naomi Shemer. The approaches to community building led by the pioneers and the Rabbis were radically different, yet both were inspired by a passionate concern for the collective future of the Jewish people, and stressed the critical importance of individual responsibility for the life of the community. This morning, all three groups wound their way up the steep, curving mountain to reach Tzfat, where they will be based through Sunday morning, and begin their exploration of mystical Judaism, Kabbalah, and prayer. Each group tours the ancient and modern city of Tzfat (K2 and K3 today, and K1 tomorrow) – learning about the 16th century Kabbalistic community as well as meeting with modern Kabbalist artist Avraham Leventhal, whose work touches upon the same theme of giving and receiving that groups explored in their Negev text studies. Participants will also have time on Friday to go shopping in the artist colony and buy their own lunch in the Old City marketplace. The groups also participated in a short introduction to the "Three Weeks" leading up to the Tisha B'Av fast day, which begin today with the 17th of Tammuz fast day. A number of participants are observing this fast day, and the entire community will participate in a shared dinner/break-fast after nightfall. And now, for a look ahead and some important information: After experiencing what will hopefully be both a relaxing and an enlightening Shabbat in Tsfat, the Nesiya groups will head toward their four-day community service projects with at-risk children. During that time, your children will have the opportunity to spend four days/three nights (Sunday, July 12-Wednesday, July 15) based at a special place called Yemin Orde, located just south of Haifa in the Carmel Mountains. Unlike the field schools and youth hostels where the groups are usually based, Yemin Orde is a unique youth village and boarding school which serves primarily new immigrants from Ethiopia and the Former Soviet Union. Many of these young people are orphans or immigrated to Israel without their parents, and Yemin Orde therefore becomes their primary home and community. We are excited about being based at Yemin Orde because of the opportunity it provides for your children to become familiar with this extraordinary institution. The fact that six of this year's Israeli Nesiya participants - two in each Kehillah - live and study at Yemin Orde makes this experience particularly valuable and relevant. In addition to sleeping, eating meals, and spending free time at Yemin Orde, each Kehillah will participate in an orientation and information session led by Yemin Orde staff, as well as in a tour of the campus and facilities led by Yemin Orde staff together with the Nesiya participants from Yemin Orde. As noted in the Nesiya Handbook, because Yemin Orde is a religious school, participants will be asked to dress according to the rules of religious modesty while they are on the Yemin Orde campus (for both boys and girls, this means sleeves that cover the shoulder and upper arm, and pants or skirts past the knee.) This is not out of a desire to impose a dress code on our participants, but rather out of sensitivity to the culture and values of the individuals with whom we will be sharing this campus, including Yemin Orde students who live on campus year-round. This "dress code" applies only while the participants are physically on campus; while they are off-campus, participants are free to dress as they are accustomed to throughout the rest of the summer. While we are committed to providing this unique experience to our Nesiya participants, we do want to acknowledge that the level of accommodations is not quite as high as in the other bases where Nesiya groups are usually located. Participants may be particularly sensitive to the fact that the rooms where they will stay are not air-conditioned, an issue which will be alleviated somewhat by the fact that the groups will be off campus during the heat of the day, and will return to the base in the later afternoon when it has started to cool off. Kol tuv, 9.7.2009 - אמנות במדבר והמסע צפונה חברים ומשפחה של נסיעה יקרים, בפעם האחרונה שנפגשנו עם משתתפי קהילה, הם היו לקראת סיום חווית המדבר והשתתפו בסבב הראשון של סדנאות היצירה. החניכים התמודדו עם הנושאים של בית ומסע וביטאו את התשובות שלהם לנושאים אלה בצורות שונות בניהן דרמה, כתיבה יוצרת, אמנות, ציור, מוזיקה, צילום ותנועה. הסדנאות ארכו יומיים, והסתיימו בהצגה של העבודות כשכל קבוצת סדנא שיתפה את הקבוצות האחרות בביטוי האמנותי שלה, וכן, ואולי אף יותר חשוב, דיברו בצורה רהוטה על תהליך היצירה. אני מעודדת אתכם לבקש מילדיכם לשמור את הרשימות והמזכרות שלהם מהמצגות, כדי שיוכלו לחלוק איתכם את החוויה כשישובו הביתה. ביום ראשון בלילה, בין שני ימי הסדנא, המשתתפים זכו בהזדמנות נפלאה לבקר בהאנגר במצפה רמון - מוסד ייחודי שהוקם על ידי קבוצה של אמנים ישראליים שבחרו לעבור לעיירת פיתוח בפריפריה על מנת לפתח את תחום האמנויות בקהילה המקומית. בזמן הביקור בהאנגר, המשתתפים ביקרו בגלריות של האמנים, שם יכלו לראות (ולקנות, אם רצו) יצירות של אמנים מקומיים; הם צפו במופע מדהים של קבוצת המחול "אדמה", השתתפו בריקוד ובסדנת "קונטקט אימפרוביזציה" בהנחיית רקדני "אדמה". ניגנו ושיתפו במוזיקה שלהם בג'אם סשן ונהנו מזמן חופשי פשוט להיות במקום המגניב הזה. המשתתפים נפרדו מהמדבר ביום חמישי בבוקר בביקור בקבר בן גוריון בשדה בוקר, בהתרגשות מיוחדת לקראת הפרק הבא של התוכנית - "בחיפוש אחר מטרה משותפת בהיסטוריה". העצירה הראשונה שלהם בדרך צפונה הייתה לחופי הכינרת, שם הם התרעננו במי האגם הצלולים (כן, הם נכנסו לשחות!) ואכלו לתיאבון פיצה ביתית (שהכין ברי, "איש הפיצה"). אחרי לינה על החוף, החניכים היו מוכנים להתחיל לחקור מודלים שונים של קהילה ותרבות המיוצגים הן על ידי חלוצים ציוניים והן על ידי תנאים בהיסטוריה של הגליל. בציפורי, (K1 ביקרו בו ביום רביעי, ו-K2 ו-K3 יהיו שם ביום שישי), הקבוצות לומדת על הקהילה הרבנית של המאה השנייה לספירה ומבקרת אתרים ארכיאולוגיים מימי הרומאים והתנאים, בין השאר את האמפיתיאטרון ואת הריסות בית הכנסת עם הפסיפס של גלגל המזלות. החניכים השוו את העבר של הקהילה היהודית הזאת לקהילה כיום, וציינו את המתחים בין יהודים שומרי מצוות לבין יהודים חילונים מאז ועד עכשיו. בחוות כינרת, האתר של הקיבוץ הראשון בישראל (K2 ו-K3 ביקרו ביום רביעי ו-K1 מבקרת היום), הקבוצות בוחנות ניסיונות יותר עכשוויים בבניית קהילה ולומדות על ציונות חילונית. הם גם מבקרים את בית הקברות בו קבורים חלוצים וחוזים ציוניים בהם המשוררת הידועה, רחל, והפזמונאית הגדולה נעמי שמר. הגישות לבניית קהילה שהובילו את החלוצים ואת הרבנים היו שונות אחת מהשנייה באופן קיצוני, אך שניהם עדיין קיבלו השראה מהדאגה לעתיד כלל העם היהודי והדגישו את החשיבות המכרעת של אחריות אישית לחיי הקהילה. הבוקר, שלושת הקבוצות עשו את דרכם במעלה התלול והמתפתל שמגיע לצפת, שם הם יהיו עד יום ראשון בבוקר, ויחלו לחקור את היהדות המיסטית, הקבלה והתפילה. כל קבוצה תסייר בעיר העתיקה והחדשה של צפת (K2 ו-K3 היום, K1 מחר) – וילמדו על הקהילה הקבלית של המאה ה-16 וכן יפגשו את האמן הקבלי המודרני אברהם לוונטל, שיצירותיו נוגעות בנושא של נתינה וקבלה שהקבוצות עסקו בו בלימוד המקורות בנגב. למשתתפים יהיה זמן חופשי ביום שישי לקניות ברובע האמנים ולקנות אוכל בשוק של העיר העתיקה. הקבוצות אף התוודעו ל"שלושת השבועות" המסתיימים בתשעה באב שהחלו היום עם צום י"ז בתמוז. בקבוצות מספר משתתפים הצמים היום ואחרי שקיעת השמש יאכלו כולם ארוחת ערב/שבירת הצום משותפת. וכעת, קצת מידע חשוב ומבט לקראת הימים הקרובים: לאחר שבת בצפת שבתקווה תהיה מרגיעה ומשמעותית. הקבוצות שלנו יתחילו את ארבעת ימי ההתנדבות שלהם עם ילדים בסיכון. במהלך אותם ימים (12-15 ביולי) לילדכם תהיה ההזדמנות לשהות במקום מיוחד מאוד הנקרא "ימין אורד", הנמצא מדרום לחיפה על הר הכרמל. שלא כמו בתי- הספר שדה ואכסניות הנוער בהם בד"כ לנות הקבוצות, ימין אורד הינו כפר נוער ייחודי אשר משמש כפנימייה לעולים חדשים מאתיופיה וברית המועצות. רבים מילדים אלו יתומים או שעלו ללא הוריהם לארץ ולכן ימין אורד מהווה להם בית קבוע וקהילה חמה במשך כל ימי השנה. זו זכות בשבילנו לשהות בימין אורד, כיוון שזוהי הזדמנות נהדרת לילדכם להכיר ולהתוודע למוסד המיוחד הזה. העובדה כי 6 מחניכינו הקיץ, שניים בכל קהילה, חיים ולומדים בימין אורד הופכת את החוויה לרלוונטית ומשמעותית במיוחד. בנוסף ללינה ולשהות בימין אורד, כל קבוצה תשתתף בפגישת הכרות עם צוות המקום, וסיור ברחבי הכפר עם הצוות וחניכי נסיעה מהמקום. כפי שנאמר כבר בדפי המידע של הקיץ, כיוון שימין אורד הינו בית- ספר דתי, החניכים יתבקשו להתלבש על פי כללי הצניעות הנהוגים בזמן השהות שלהם במקום ( זאת אומרת- לבנים ולבנות- חולצות שמכסות את הכתפיים ומכנסיים/ חצאיות המכסות את הברך.) זה לא מרצוננו לכפות קודי לבוש על החניכים, אך עלינו לכבד ולהיות רגישים לתרבות ולערכי תושבי המקום, כולל חניכי ימין אורד השוהים במקום לאורך כל השנה. "קוד הלבוש" יידרש מהחניכים רק כאשר הם ישהו בימין אורד, כאשר הם בפעילות מחוץ לקמפוס הם יהיו חופשיים להתלבש כרצונם, כמו ביתר הפעילות במהלך הקיץ. למרות שאנו שמחים מאוד לאפשר לחניכים את ההזדמנות המיוחדת לשהות בימין אורד, חשוב לציין כי תנאי הדיור במקום הם לא גבוהים כמו בשאר המקומות בהם אנו שוהים במהלך הקיץ, רגישות מיוחדת יכולה לעלות בכך שהחדרים לא ממוזגים, דבר שנפתר בחלקו בזכות העובדה שרוב היום, ובייחוד בשעות החמות החניכים לא יהיו בימין אורד, אלא בהתנדבות, ויחזרו לכפר רק אחר- הצהריים, כאשר יתחיל להתקרר... אנו מעודדים אתכם ללמוד יותר על ימין אורד דרך אתרם - www.yeminorde.org , וכן נשמח לשמוע ממכם ולענות שאלות נוספות. לפני שאחתום, כמה פרטים והודעות טכניות:
