August 3, 2009 - Conflicting Visions

A record-breaking amount of energy, dancing and singing took place yesterday evening in the (usually) quiet neighborhood of Mamilla in Jerusalem. Kehillah 2009 attended a private workshop-concert with one of Israel's top singer-songwriters, Eti Ankri. Ankri has won two awards for the Israeli female Singer of the Year, and recently put out a new album, "Songs of Yehuda Halevi," which includes eleven songs that she composed based on poems written by Yehuda Halevi, the great 12th century Spanish-Jewish physician, philosopher and poet. The concert was fun and inspiring, spiritual and energizing. Nesiya participants sang along to songs they had learned beforehand, danced, and simply sat captivated in their seats taking it all in. The concert concluded with an amazing and energy-filled jam session, in which many participants and staff joined Ankri onstage to improvise and make music together. Backtracking a little to where we last left off, I want to fill you in on the groups' encounters with Bedouin-Israeli high school students in Rahat last week. As was to be expected in a meeting between people of different backgrounds, and who could even be considered in conflict with each other, the mifgash (encounter) with Bedouin-Israelis, one of Israel's largest minorities, comprised a range of a reactions and emotions: exciting, challenging, fun, exhausting, troubling, and hopeful. A wide range of views were shared and all participants – Bedouin, Israeli, and North American – began to gain a better understanding of their new acquaintances and even learned new things about their current friends.

During the two days in Rahat, the groups successfully overcame the challenge of meeting new people and communicating in three languages. Participants played ice-breakers and getting-to-know-you games, visited the shuk on the bustling "market day" in Rahat, and spent time in small groups of participants and staff visiting the homes of Bedouin students where they got a first-hand experience of traditional Bedouin hospitality. The programming also included a cultural exchange, in which each cultural group – Israeli Jews, Israeli Bedouins, and American Jews – shared or taught a dance, song or other activity that they felt was representative of their unique culture. The main activity of this unit focused on a collage creation, in which participants worked separately and together with their Bedouin peers to create a series of collages from newspaper clippings that expressed their individual and communal identities.

Over the course of the two days, the programming grew increasingly intense and complex, as participants discussed more deeply and in detail their different views on identity, culture, religion and politics, and the different ways they relate to Israel as a country and a Jewish State. The exchange ended with a closing circle in which the Nesiya and Bedouin participants reflected on what the experience meant for each of them. Participants spoke eloquently and sensitively about the opportunity to meet with new people from different backgrounds and the personal meaning that this exchange had for them.

After concluding the Bedouin Unit on Wednesday, Kehillah 2009 returned to Jerusalem where the groups settled into the Beit Shmuel Youth Hostel (their base for the next six days), and began preparations for Tisha B'Av, a fast day commemorating the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. Participants chose between a range of different options to attend on Wednesday night, including a variety of prayer options and Eicha (Lamentations) readings, as well as some non-prayer alternative options. Later that night, a substantial group of participants from all three Kehillot walked from their base to the nearby Old City in the middle of the night to visit the Kotel, together with thousands of others also commemorating this solemn day.

The next morning, all three groups visited Yad Vashem, Israel's national Holocaust Museum, where they addressed questions of destruction, memory and renewal, and reflected on the ways in which Jews have related to these issues throughout history. The participants then returned to the hostel for an optional lunch and ample rest time. Later that afternoon participants each chose from a range of optional sessions, including a screening of the Israeli movie "James' Journey to Jerusalem," a discussion and creative text study on "Senseless Hatred," and an activity based on the John Lennon song "Imagine." After optional afternoon and evening prayers at local synagogues or the Kotel, everyone joined together for a rich and filling break-fast dinner.

On Friday, the groups visited Har Herzl, where they once again examined the question of memory and renewal in a different light and context, and examined the motivations behind the choice of the nascent Israeli state to place this site adjacent to Yad Vashem. They then spent an exciting lunch and some free time in the Machane Yehuda shuk (open air market) where they got a taste of the pre-Shabbat Jerusalem hustle and bustle and vendors hawking their wares.

And then... back to Beit Shmuel to prepare for one of the most exciting (in my opinion!) Shabbat experiences of the program, Shabbat in Jerusalem! Participants were excited by the wide range of Jerusalem synagogue options, and even more excited to experience the Shabbat atmosphere here. In addition to much time for resting and relaxing, the Shabbat program included a lively and tension-filled program called "Conflicting Visions", in which participants examined the different visions of historical thinkers for the Jewish state, and then shared their own diverse views on this topic. The groups also enjoyed hearing another round of chanich stories and the final madrich story on Shabbat afternoon. Shabbat concluded with a lovely havdalah in each Kehillah, followed by an incredible talent show, in which your children blew away both staff and other participants with their amazing talent and confidence – with everything from stand-up comedy to a capella singing, and flute duets to modern dance.

After spending over a week encountering so many different ideas about Israeli culture, religion and politics, participants had the opportunity to hear experts speak during yesterday's full-day Seminar on the Israeli-Arab Conflict. Each group conducted an opening session that provided some time for participants to begin sharing their own associations with the conflict, and an introduction to the speakers and the topics of their sessions. The seminar then moved into encounters with four important Israeli figures who shared their diverse views on this most complex issue. Participants were extremely engaged, attentive and articulate throughout this challenging day, and exhibited extraordinary thoughtfulness and sensitivity as they struggled with the difficult questions regarding the complex situation in the Middle East. Following last night's concert and a decent night of sleep after a long day, participants will be spending today wrapping up the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv unit and beginning to reflect on their goals for the final week of programming. They will then head down south to sleep out under the stars beneath Masada, which they will hike up tomorrow in time to witness the sunrise over the Dead Sea.

3.8.09 - גישות מתנגשות

שלום למשפחות ולחברי נסיעה,

שמחה וריקודים סוערים ושוברי שיא התרחשו שלשום בערב, בשכונת ממילא השקטה בירושלים. קהילה 2009, השתתפה בסדנת אומן- הופעה פרטית עם אחת הזמרות הידועות ביותר בישראל- אתי אנקרי. אנקרי, זכתה פעמיים בפרס זמרת השנה של ישראל ולאחרונה הוציאה אלבום שירים נוסף- " שירי יהודה הלוי", הכולל בתוכו אחד עשר שירים אשר נכתבו ע"י רבי יהודה הלוי, פילוסוף,פיזיקאי ומשורר יהודי חשוב מספרד של המאה ה-12 שהלחינה אתי אנקרי. הקונצרט היה כיף ומעורר השראה, מרגש וספיריטואלי.

חניכי נסיעה שרו יחד איתה, שירים שלמדו מראש,רקדו וצפו במופע קשובים ומפנימים.

המופע כלל סדנת תיפוף מלאת אנרגיות שבמהלכה ילדים ואנשי צוות רבים עלו לבמה והצטרפו אל אתי אנקרי בשירה ונגינה ספונטאנית ומאולתרת.

בחזרה לנקודה שבה עצרנו בפעם האחרונה- אני רוצה לספר לכם על מפגש הקבוצות עם תלמידי תיכון בדואים: ישראלים מרהט שבוע שעבר. כצפוי ממפגש בין אנשים מרקעים שונים, אשר ביניהם קונפליקט ומתיחות מסוימת, המפגש עם הבדואים- ישראלים, המיעוט הגדול ביותר בישראל: העלה קשת רחבה של תגובות ורגשות: מרגש, מאתגר, כיף, מתיש,מדאיג ומלא תקווה. מגוון רחב של דעות עלו ונשמעו, וכל המשתתפים- בדואים, ישראלים ואמריקאים כאחד החלו לרכוש הבנה טובה יותר על המכרים החדשים שלהם ואף למדו דברים חדשים על החברים הנוכחים.

במהלך שני הימים ברהט, הקבוצות התגברו בהצלחה רבה על האתגר במפגש עם אנשים חדשים ובתקשורת בשלוש שפות שונות. המשתתפים שיחקו במשחקי הכרות שונים בכדי "לשבור את הקרח", ביקרו בשוק העמוס של רהט, וביקרו בקבוצות קטנות של משתתפים ואנשי צוות , בבתיהם של התלמידים הבדואים, שם הם חוו ממקור ראשון אירוח בדואי מסורתי. התוכנית אף כללה שיתוף בין תרבויות, בו כל קבוצת תרבות- יהודים ישראלים, יהודים אמריקאים ובדואים ישראלים- חלקה או לימדה שיר, ריקוד או איזשהו משחק אשר ייצגה את התרבות הייחודית ממנה הם מגיעים. הפעילות המרכזית של המפגש התרכזה על יצירת קולז', אשר עליו עבדו המשתתפים בנפרד ויחד עם בן זוג בדואי, כדי ליצור סדרה של קולז'ים מגזרי עיתונים אשר יבטאו את זהותם האינדיבידואלית והקהילתית.

במהלך שני הימים הללו התוכנית הפכה ליותר ויותר אינטנסיבית ומורכבת, כאשר חניכים התיידנו והעמיקו בדעותיהם השונות על זהות, תרבות, דת ופוליטיקה, ועל יחסם השונה לישראל כמדינה וכמדינה יהודית.

המפגש הסתיים במעגל סיכום במהלכו חניכי נסיעה והחניכים הבדואים חשבו ושיתפו על משמעות המפגש בשבילם. החניכים דיברו ברהיטות וברגישות על ההזדמנות שהייתה להם לפגוש אנשים חדשים מרקעים כה שונים ועל המשמעות האישית שנתן המפגש עבורם.

אחרי סגירת היחידה עם הבדואים ביום רביעי, קהילה 2009, חזרה לירושלים, שם הקבוצות התארחו באכסניית בית שמואל (ביתם, לשישה ימים הבאים), והחלו בהכנות לצום תשעה באב,יום לזכר חורבן בית המקדש בירושלים. החניכים בחרו בין קשת רחבה של אפשריות באותו ערב שכללו מגוון של סוגי תפילות וקריאת מגילת איכה וכן כמה אופציות של פעילויות אלטרנטיביות ללא תפילה. מאוחר יותר באותו לילה, קבוצה גדולה של משתתפים מכל הקהילות צעדה לעיר העתיקה, הקרובה לאכסנייה, לבקר בכותל יחד עם עוד אלפי מבקרים שבאו לזכור יום חשוב זה.

בבוקר למחרת, כל שלושת הקבוצות ביקרו ביד ושם, מוזיאון השואה הלאומי, שם העלו שאלות על שואה, זיכרון ותקומה, והתבוננו על הדרכים השונות בהם יהודים התמודדו עם אותן שאלות לאורך ההיסטוריה.

לאחר מכן חזרו החניכים לאכסניה לארוחת צהריים אפשרית ולמנוחה. אחר הצהריים בחרו החניכים ממגוון אפשרויות של מפגשים, בניהם: צפייה בסרט הישראלי "מסע גיימס לארץ הקודש", לימודי טקסט ודיון בנושא "שנאת חינם", ופעילות סביב שירו של ג'ון לנון "דמיינו לכם". ולבסוף, לאחר הפעילות לבחירה, ותפילה אופציונאלית בבית- כנסת קרובים ובכותל, כולם הצטרפו יחד לארוחת ערב עשירה ומספקת.

ביום שישי, הקבוצות ביקרו בהר- הרצל, שם הם פעם נוספת בחנו את השאלה של זיכרון וקוממיות באור ובהקשר אחר ובחנו גם את המניע מאחורי ההחלטה של כנסת ישראל למקם את יד ושם והר הרצל סמוכים אחד לשני. לאחר מכן הם אכלו ארוחת צהריים ובילו זמן חופשי בשוק מחנה יהודה, שם יכלו לחוות את אווירת ההכנות לשבת בשוק העמוס והצבעוני.

אז... בחזרה לבית שמואל להתכוננן לשבת המרגשת ביותר של התוכנית- שבת בירושלים! החניכים היו נרגשים לקראת המבחר הרב של התפילות ובתי הכנסת בירושלים ואף נרגשים יותר לחוות את השבת באווירה המיוחדת של המקום.בנוסף לזמן הרב של המנוחה, השבת כללה תוכנית מסעירה ומלאת מתח הנקראת " גישות מתנגשות", בה החניכים בחנו דעות והשקפות של דמויות והוגים היסטוריים שונים על רעיון המדינה היהודית ושיתפו את דעותיהם שלהם בנושא. החניכים גם שמעו סבב נוסף של סיפורי חניכים, וסיפור אחרון של מדריך אחר הצהריים. השבת נסגרה בהבדלה מקסימה ובמופע כישרונות בו ילדיכם הדהימו חניכים ומדריכים כאחד ביכולותיהם הייחודיות ממופעי סטנד-אפ, שירה, דואט בחליל ועד מחול מודרני.

לאחר שבילו יותר משבוע בהיחשפות לדעות ורעיונות שונים על התרבות הישראלית, הדת והפוליטיקה, לחניכים ניתנה ההזדמנות, ביום ראשון, לשמוע הרצאות ממומחים במסגרת סמינר על "הקונפליקט הערבי- ישראלי". כל קבוצה פתחה בפעילות אשר אפשרה לחניכים להתחיל לשתף ולדבר על תחושתם ויחסם האישי לקונפליקט, ללמוד ולהכיר קצת על המרצים ונושאי השיחות. הסמינר אז פנה למפגש עם ארבעה דמויות ישראליות חשובות אשר דיברו על נק' מבטם על נושא מורכב זה. לאורך כל יום מאתגר זה, החניכים היו מאוד דרוכים וקשובים וגילו מחשבה ורגישות יוצאת דופן בהתמודדות עם הנושאים והשאלות הקשות הנוגעות למצב המורכב במזרח התיכון. אנא תנו מבט ברשימת המרצים המצורפת, הכוללת רקע ומידע על כל אחד מהאנשים אשר פגשו את ילדיכם ביום ראשון.

לאחר הקונצרט של יום ראשון ושנת לילה הגונה בסופו של יום מתיש זה, החניכים בילו את יום שני בסיכום יחידת ירושלים- ת"א, והחלו בחשיבה על מטרותיהם ורצונותיהם לקראת השבוע האחרון של התוכנית, אחר הצהרים הם החלו לרדת דרומה, לישון תחת כיפת השמיים, למרגלות מצדה והיום לפנות בוקר קמו שלושת הקבוצות בכדי לעלות להר בכדי לחזות בזריחה על מצדה וים המלח.

אחרי זריחה מרהיבה וביקור באתר מצדה המשתתפים נסעו לבית ספר שדה עין גדי, שם הם נחו והחלו לתכנן את פרויקט הגמר שהם יציגו לקבוצה. מיום שלישי בצהריים, ילדיכם חושבים על החוויה שהם עברו בחמשת השבועות האחרונים, ובוחרים רעיון, חוויה או שאלה בה הם יתמקדו בפרויקט. במהלך שלושת הימים האחרונים, מנחי סדנאות האמנות והמדריכים החינוכיים של הקבוצות היו פנויים להתייעצות, ולסיוע בפיתוח הרעיון הנבחר. הם גם קיבלו די והותר זמן לנוח בבסיס היפהפה הזה המשקיף לים המלח, והיו להם מספר הזדמנויות לבקר ולשחות בים המלח, בנחל דוד ובשמורת עין גדי הסמוכים לבית ספר השדה.

הערב החניכים יחלו בהצגת הפרויקטים שלהם לשאר חברי הקהילה, והם ימשיכו בכך עד מחר בבוקר.
