July 16, 2009 - Community in Action

Dear Nesiya Parents and Friends,

You should be very proud of your Israel travelers. All Nesiya Kehillah groups completed their community service projects yesterday, and most participants agree that working four days with children from troubled backgrounds is fulfilling, fun and also extremely difficult. Throughout the project, participants remained dedicated and energized. Overall, the projects were successful and provided a hands-on learning experience about what it means to be a member of an active and giving community.

During the day, each group led and played games with the children at their youth village, enjoyed down-time, and worked on a group art project using recycled objects such as bottles and cereal boxes to create mobiles of beautiful flowers and other decorative objects. The participants from K3 also planned and facilitated many activities and workshops for the children from Achuzat Yeladim, including juggling, jewelry making, beat-boxing, a drama workshop, a scavenger hunt, outdoor sports, dancing and a talent show competition.

The staff at the youth village conveyed exceptional gratitude for the hard work and creative efforts of the Nesiya participants and staff. At the end of the four days, the Achuzat Yeladim staff shared with the Nesiya staff that of all the times that Nesiya groups have volunteered at Achuzat Yeladim, this was the most successful. They felt that the Nesiya participants accepted the youth village children for who they were, gave them personal attention, and simply spent time with them in ways that truly touched these kids who don't have a lot of caring people in their lives. The impact your children had was strikingly evident in the emotional hugs goodbye that they received from many of the Achuzat Yeladim children.

I personally had the opportunity to spend much of the day on Tuesday with K3, which was both fun for me, and a great opportunity to see your children taking initiative in running activities and interacting beautifully with the children at the youth village. The staff (myself included) took many pictures of K3 this week, some of which have already been posted on the Nesiya website, with more to come!

Evenings were filled with recreational and educational activities. For example, each group spent an evening becoming better acquainted with some of the challenges facing Israeli culture and society in a workshop called "Cafe Dilemma." K3 participants sat at cafe tables on Monday evening and were "served" various issues and tensions facing Israeli society today, including, to name a few, socio-economic gaps, religious tensions, and discrimination against minorities. Each group's Israeli participants offered unique insight into these issues based on their experience as residents of Israel. The North American participants engaged in heated debate and also learned from their Israeli peers.

On Monday afternoon, following their first full day of community service, K3 had a relaxing afternoon at the Mediterranean, at the beautiful and calm Hof Dor beach. On Tuesday morning, they participated in an intense drama workshop based on the play "The Night of the Twentieth" by Yehoshua Sobol, which they had read the previous week. And on Tuesday evening they had a short tour of the old German Colony in Haifa, including a peek into the Bahai Gardens, and then had an evening out in Merkaz Hacarmel in Haifa, a nice outdoor area, with time to explore, shop, and buy their own dinner.

After completing the community service unit yesterday, all groups traveled to their new base, the Hermon Field School in the northeastern Galilee, known for its beautiful campus filled with flowers and large open lawns. There is a nearby network of crisscrossing streams and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

"What's happening now? Right at this moment?" you ask.

K1 and K3 are hiking in Gamla, known as the "Masada of the North", a site which raises many issues regarding the ways in which Jews viewed themselves as obligated to one another throughout history, and the question of what is worth fighting for. Tomorrow, they will visit Har Ben Tal, a viewpoint from which they can see (from a distance!) the border between Israel and Syria, where they will discuss issues relating to the Golan Heights from 1967 through today. K2 is visiting Har Ben Tal today, and will visit Gamla tomorrow. I can't decide which group is learning the most and having the most fun - it’s a tough call!

All groups will be based at the Hermon Field School through next Tuesday morning, including a shared Shabbat and arts workshops, during which time they will continue to unravel the theme of community, exploring the challenges and choices Jews face in pursuing a shared framework of life together.

הורי נסיעה וחברים יקרים!

אתם יכולים להתגאות בטיילים שלכם. כל הקהילות של נסיעה סיימו את הפרויקטים בעבודה הקהילתית, ומרבית המשתתפים מסכימים שהתנדבות במשך 4 ימים עם ילדים מרקע קשה היא עבודה מספקת, כיפית וגם מאתגרת מאוד. במהלך הפרויקט, המשתתפים נשארו מסורים ומלאי אנרגיה. בסך הכול, הפרויקטים היו מוצלחים והיו חוויה חינוכית ומוחשית לגבי המשמעות של להיות חבר פעיל ותורם בקהילה.

במשך היום, כל קבוצה הנחתה ושיחקה משחקים עם ילדי הכפר, נהנו מזמן מנוחה, ועבדו על פרויקט אמנותי בו השתמשו בחפצים ממוחזרים כמו בקבוקים, קופסאות דגני בוקר ועוד כדי ליצור מוביילים של פרחים וחפצי נוי אחרים. המשתתפים מ-K3 גם תכננו והנחו פעילויות וסדנאות רבות לילדי "אחוזת הילדים", ביניהם סדנת ג'אגלינג, עשיית תכשיטים, "ביטבוקסינג", סדנת דרמה, משחק "חפש את המטמון", פעילויות ספורט, ריקוד ותחרות כישרונות.

הצוות של כפר הילדים והנוער הודו במיוחד להשקעה הרבה והיצירתיות של משתתפי נסיעה והצוות. בסיומם של ארבעת הימים, צוות אחוזת הילדים סיפר לצוות נסיעה שמכל הפעמים שקבוצות נסיעה התנדבו באחוזת הילדים,זו הייתה השנה המוצלחת ביותר. הם הרגישו שחניכי נסיעה קיבלו את ילדי הכפר בגלל מי שהם, נתנו להם יחס אישי, ופשוט בילו איתם בדרך שבאמת נגעה בילדים אלה, שאין סביבם אנשים רבים שיכולים להעניק בצורה כזאת. את ההשפעה הגדולה שהייתה לילדיכם ניתן היה לראות בחיבוקים הנרגשים שהם קיבלו מילדי "אחוזת הילדים".

אני זכיתי לבלות את מרבית יום שלישי עם K3, דבר שהיה מאוד כיף עבורי והזדמנות נפלאה לראות את הילדים שלכם יוזמים פעילויות ומתחברים בצורה יפה לילדי הכפר. הצוות (וגם אני) צילם תמונות רבות של K3, את חלקן אפשר כבר לראות באתר ועוד יעלו בהמשך!

שעות הצהריים והערב היו מלאות בפעילות חינוכית ומשחקים. כל קבוצה הקדישה זמן כדי להכיר טוב יותר את האתגרים שיכולים לעמוד בפניה במפגש עם התרבות והחברה הישראלית, בפעילות "קפה דילמה". משתתפיK3 ישבו ביום שני בערב סביב שולחנות בית קפה ו"הגישו" להם סוגיות ומתחים שונים שעומדים בפני החברה הישראלית היום, כולל לדוגמא, פערים סוציו-אקונומיים, מתחים דתיים ואפליה נגד מיעוטים. בכל קבוצה, המשתתפים הישראלים האירו ושיתפו לגבי הנושאים הללו מתוך החוויה שלהם כתושבי הארץ. המשתתפים הצפון-אמריקאיים נטלו חלק בדיון סוער לגבי הנושאים הבוערים וגם למדו מחבריהם הישראליים לקבוצה.

ביום שני בצהריים, לאחר היום המלא הראשון בהתנדבות, K3 נהנו מאחר צהריים רגוע בחוף דור היפהפה. ביום שלישי בבוקר, הם השתתפו בסדנת דרמה אינטנסיבית המבוססת על המחזה "ליל העשרים" של יהושע סובול, שהם קראו בשבוע קודם. ביום שלישי בערב היה להם סיור קצר במושבה הגרמנית בחיפה, והצצה לגנים הבהאיים ואז ערב במרכז הכרמל בעיר, איזור יפה שבו היה להם זמן לעשות קניות, להסתובב, ולקנות לעצמם ארוחת ערב.

לאחר השלמת יחידת העבודה הקהילתית אתמול, כל הקבוצות נסעו לביתם החדש, בית ספר שדה חרמון, הידוע ביופיו, בפרחים הרבים ובמדשאות הרחבות. ישנם נחלים רבים שזורמים בקרבת מקום ונוף הרים מרהיב.

אתם ודאי שואלים "מה קורה עכשיו? ממש ברגע זה?"

K3 ו-K1 מטיילים בגמלא, שנחשבת "מצדה של הצפון", אתר המעלה סוגיות רבות בנוגע לדרכים בהם יהודים ראו את עצמם מחויבים אחד לשני במהלך ההיסטוריה, ואת השאלה, עבור מה שווה להילחם. מחר, הם יבקרו בהר בן-טל, נקודה ממנה אפשר לראות (ממרחק!) את הגבול בין ישראל וסוריה. שם הם ישוחחו על הנושאים המתקשרים לרמת הגולן מ-1967 ועד היום. K2 מבקרת בהר בן-טל היום, ויהיו בגמלא מחר. אני לא יכולה להחליט איזה קבוצה לומדת יותר ונהנית יותר – הבחירה קשה!

בית ספר שדה חרמון יהיה הבסיס של כל הקבוצות עד ליום שלישי בבוקר. הם ישהו שם בשבת וישתתפו בסדנאות אמנות, בהן יתעסקו בנושא "קהילה" ויחקרו את האתגרים והבחירות שהיהודים התמודדו עימם בשאיפה שלהם ליצור מסגרת של חיים משותפים.
