Kehillah 2009 Updates

June 29, 2009 - Welcome to Israel!

Dear Nesiya Family and Friends,

Your children have arrived in Israel!!! The day we have all been eagerly anticipating has finally arrived: Day 1 of Kehillah Experience 2009. Our journey is off to a great start!

Participants are putting their long flight and inevitable tiredness behind them and are excited to be in Israel, meet new people, and begin their nesiya (journey) together. And lucky for us, we (parents and I) can begin our vicarious, virtual journey as well!

The Americans and Israelis were divided into three subgroups – Kehillahs (or Ks, as we call them) One, Two, and Three. Most of the activities this summer will be experienced within these smaller groups to ensure the best dynamic and more individual attention for each participant.

We will soon be sending you a group list for your child's Kehillah, as well as an itinerary with information about what his or her group will be doing each day of the program, and where they will be sleeping each night. Until then, please refer to the itinerary in your Nesiya Handbook – and keep reading to find out what your children will be doing in the next few days:

On to the exciting details …After arriving at the airport, the entire group traveled the short distance to Park Canada, a beautiful nature reserve between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, where they enjoyed a picnic lunch (pita and hummus, boureakas, cheeses, fresh fruit and veggies, and more) and welcoming activities led by their counselor-educators and Nesiya senior staff. Charles Herman, Nesiya's Executive Director, welcomed the group and spoke to them about the complex and multi-faceted truths of Israel and Judaism that the groups will explore this summer.

All groups then headed south towards Har HaNegev, on the edge of the Ramon Crater, also known as the 'Grand Canyon’ of Israel. This "field school", where the groups arrived just a short while ago, will serve as the base residence for all three groups through early next week.

Tomorrow morning they will begin their desert experience by examining the Lech Lecha Torah text, in which God commands Abraham to leave his home to begin a journey into the wilderness. And tomorrow afternoon the group will go out into the Negev desert for a three-day/two-night 'noded' – a hiking, camping and sleeping-out adventure. Consequently, they will not have cell phone reception until Thursday night (Israel time). Please do not be concerned if you cannot reach your child by phone until then.

I look forward to further updating you about your child’s journey through this email list and parallel online updates. Beginning in the next couple days, and throughout the summer, we will also be adding photos of the groups' adventures to the Nesiya website. Be sure to check the site every few days to look for new pictures. And please feel free to call or email me or any of the Nesiya staff with any questions or concerns.

הורי נסיעה שלום,

 היום לו כולנו חיכינו הגיע לבסוף: היום הראשון של "קהילה _ 2009". המסע שלנו עומד לצאת לדרך.

המשתתפים האמריקאים שמים את הטיסה הארוכה ואת העייפות הבלתי נמנעת מאחוריהם. וכולם, ישראלים ואמריקאים, נרגשים לפגוש אנשים חדשים ולהתחיל את ה"נסיעה" שלהם ביחד.

המשתתפים מחולקים לשלוש תת קבוצות (או קהילות כמו שאנחנו קוראים להם). את רוב הפעילויות בקיץ הם יחוו בפורום של הקבוצות הקטנות יותר הללו להבטיח דינאמיקה שמאפשרת יותר מקום ויחס אישי לכל משתתף.

בקרוב נשלח לכם את רשימת שמות של הקהילה אליה הבן/ בת שלכם שייכים כמו גם לו"ז בו יפורט מה הם הולכים לעשות בכל יום בתוכנית ואיפה הם ישנו בכל לילה. עד אז אתם יכולים להתייחס ללו"ז שכבר שלחנו לכם יחד עם הטפסים של נסיעה ולהמשיך לקרוא כדי לדעת יותר על הימים הקרובים:

ולפרטים העסיסיים... אחרי ההגעה לשדה תעופה כל הקבוצה נסעה לפארק קנדה, שמורת טבע יפהפייה הנמצאת במרחק קצר במשה התעופה ומירושלים. בפארק קנדה סעדה הקבוצה ארוחת צהריים בפיקניק (שכלל פיתות, חומוס, בורקסים, גבינות, ירקות, פירות ועוד). לאחר מכן נפתחה התוכנית רשמית בפעילויות היכרות פתיחה למיניהם שהובלו על ידי צוות נסיעה. צ'ארלס הרמן, מנכ"ל נסיעה, קידם את פני הילדים ודיבר איתם על המורכבות וריבוי הפנים של היהדות והישראליות שהקבוצה תחקור בקיץ.

לאחר מכן עלו הקהילות לאוטובוסים ונסעו דרומה לכיוון מצפה רמון לבי"ס שדה הר הנגב. בבי"ס שדה זה ישהו שלושת הקהילות בשבוע הקרוב.

היום יחלו הילדים את חווית המדבר שלהם על ידי בחינת הטקסט של "לך לך" מספר בראשית. בטקסט מצווה אלוהים את אברהם לעזוב את ביתו ולהתחיל במסעו לעבר הלא נודע. אחרי הצהריים יצאו הקהילות לטיול נודד של שלושה ימים ושני לילות בנגב. טיול שיכלול צעידה, שטח ולינה תחת כיפת השמיים (מלון אלף הכוכבים). כתוצאה מכך, לא תהיה להם קליטה בטלפונים הסלולריים עד יום חמישי בערב אז אל תהיו מודאגים אם לא תצליחו לתפוס אותם בטלפון.

אני אשמח לעדכן אתכם בקורותיהם של הילדים בהמשך המסע דרך רשימת המיילים הזו. החל מהשבוע הבא ולאורך הקיץ כולו נעלה תמונות של הקבוצה והרפתקאותיה באתר של נסיעה כך שכל מספר ימים תוכלו לצפות בתמונות חדשות ולהישאר מעודכנים.
