Charles Charles Herman

Charles Herman, M. Ed., Executive Director
Charles has led Nesiya since its inception in 1985. He earned his B.A. degree in Comparative Literature from Brown University and a Masters of Education degree from Harvard University. He also studied in Jerusalem at the Hebrew University and the Pardes Institute. He has worked with delinquent boys in New York City, as a photographer in Bali, Indonesia, and with Jewish education agencies in Chicago and Cleveland. Charles lives in Jerusalem with his wife Donna and four sons.

Tami

Tami Dayan, CFO / COO
Tami has led the restructuring of Nesiya's U.S. and Israel operations and finances since 2004. A native of Tzfat, Tami earned certificates in teaching and tour guiding prior to beginning studies at the Hebrew University, where she earned her B.A. in Finance and Psychology, and an International Collegiate Baccalaureate degree in Social Sciences from Thomas Edison State College. Prior to joining Nesiya, Tami worked for five years as a project manager and comptroller at a high-tech company based in Israel and California.

Recruitment and Communications


Julie Charles Herman

Julie Lake, North American Director of Recruitment and Community Outreach
Julie joined Nesiya in 2006 with a background in education, communications, and human resource development. Since graduating from Oberlin College with a B.A. in Religion, Julie has worked as a community service manager at a neighborhood-based justice center, as a Hebrew School teacher, and as a recruiter and administrator for a New York-based international human resource agency. Julie has also traveled, studied, and volunteered in Israel, France, Germany, and India. Julie lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Yael Yael Foss

Yael Foss, North American Assistant Director of Recruitment and Community Outreach
Yael was first a participant in Nesiya's 1999 Kehillah Seminar and rejoined Nesiya as a counselor-educator in the summer of 2007. She completed her B.A. in Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University, and has studied Spanish, Arabic, Hebrew, and Russian at the University of Madrid and Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Yael has taught Hebrew and general studies in her hometown of Baltimore and in New York. She participated in Young Judaea's Year Course program and most recently worked for and traveled with Kivunim: New Directions exploring Jewish communities around the world. Yael lives in New York City.

Saul

Saul Zaritt, Communications and Development Associate
Saul was first a Nesiya participant as a New Jewish High School student in the spring of 2000 and rejoined Nesiya as an educator, recruiter, and communications associate in 2005. Following his graduation from the University of Chicago with a degree in comparative literature, Saul was a Fulbright Fellow at the Hebrew University. In addition to his work with Nesiya, Saul is currently a graduate student in Hebrew Literature at the Hebrew University. Saul lives in Jerusalem.

David

David Green, Recruitment Associate
David joined Nesiya's year-round staff in 2006 and has worked as a counselor-educator on Nesiya's summer 2006 and 2007 Kehillah Experience. David completed his B.A. at Occidental College in LA, where he studied Classics and Chemistry. Since graduating, David has worked as a Jewish youth group coordinator, weekend retreat director, director of a local Jewish summer camp, and as an English teacher at a Los Angeles public school. Last year, prior to joining the professional staff of Nesiya's summer program, David studied at the Pardes Institute in Jerusalem. He is also working this year as Family Education Coordinator for Wilshire Boulevard Temple. David lives in Pasadena, California.

Zvi

Zvi Hirschfield, M.A., Senior Educational Consultant and Master Teacher
Rabbi Zvi has worked with Nesiya programs in North America and Israel since 1994, as a senior educator, director of education and curriculum writer. He is also a full-time faculty member at the Pardes Institute for Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. Zvi earned a B.A. in Jewish Studies from Columbia University and an M.A. in Jewish Studies from Harvard University, and has studied at Yeshivat Har Etzion. He has rabbinic ordination from the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. He lives in Alon Shvut with his wife Dena and four children.

Rivka

Rivka Lehmann, Associate Director
Rivka has worked with Nesiya since 1999 as a counselor, head counselor, senior educator and supervisor for Nesiya programs. She also now directs Nesiya's year-round programs for Israeli high school students and educational training programs for Israeli post-army and college students. Rivka studied Theater Arts and Community Theater at Tel Aviv University. She lives in Jerusalem with her husband Oded Brama and their two children.

Leah

Leah Solomon, Associate Director
Leah joined Nesiya in 2003 as a senior educator and supervisor. She also oversees programs for North American client organizations, and communications and development work. Leah worked previously at the Gann Academy in Boston and at the Genesis program at Brandeis University. She holds a B.A. in Jewish Studies from Harvard University, and has studied at the Conservative Yeshiva, the Hartman Institute, and the Pardes Institute. Leah and her husband Elisha Klein live in Jerusalem with their son.

Rachael

Rachael Gelfman, Senior Educator and Communications Associate
Rachael began working with Nesiya in 2004 and worked as a counselor and subsequently a head counselor in three Nesiya programs. Currently, Rachael is a member of Nesiya's communications and development department and also contributes to program design and supervision for North American client organizations. Rachael holds a B.A. in the Study of Religion from Harvard University and a masters degree in Jewish Civilization from Hebrew University. Rachael makes her home in Jerusalem.

Rinat

Rinat Safania, Coordinator of Nesiya Programs for Israelis
Rinat joined the Nesiya staff as a counselor-educator in 2006, and now coordinates Nesiya's year-round programs for Israeli high school students and experiential education leadership training for post-army and college-age Israeli young adults.  A native of Jerusalem, Rinat has worked as a program coordinator for Telem, the Israeli youth movement of Progressive Judaism.
Rinat earned a B.A. in Psychology and Behavioral Sciences from Ben Gurion University. She is currently working toward a M.Ed. in Jewish Education and a M.Ed. in School Counseling. Rinat lives in Jerusalem.

Ami

Ami Landau, Administrative Manager
Ami joined Nesiya in 2004 as administrative coordinator, overseeing all logistical and administrative arrangements for Nesiya's Israel programs. He worked previously at Young Judea, the Jewish Agency, and Israel's Ministry of Immigrant Absorption. He earned a B.A. in Sociology from Hebrew University. Ami lives in Efrat with his wife, Sarit, and three children.

Eti

Eti Rivlin, Bookkeeper
Eti Rivlin joined the Nesiya staff in 2005 as a part-time bookkeeper. She began her career working in typesetting and printing and then, after studying bookkeeping at Ort, she became a bookkeeper and has worked in bookkeeping for twenty years. Prior to joining Nesiya, she worked for a number of years in the accounting department at the Jerusalem Post. Eti has 3 grown children and a new granddaughter, and lives in Jerusalem with her husband Yuval.

Having different counselors with different religious practices and ideas made it comfortable for me to explore my own religiousness. I felt we were exploring together.
